Frequently Asked Questions
Is kiteboarding a safe sport?
It is considered an extreme sport, so there is some inherent risk, but with advancements in equipment and safety systems over the past 15 years, and proper instruction from a certified professional, learning to kite can be safe.
Where do lessons take place?
Although PEI Kiteboarding is based out of Cavendish, we do 99% of our land lessons and all of our water lessons on Malpeque Bay aka Kite Point. Flat, shallow, warm water and unobstructed wind allows for the perfect conditions for learning.
Is there an age limit?
It is more about weight than age. We recommend a minimum of 80 lbs/36 kgs for children, who can be as young as 9-10 years old, and have a desire to learn. It is oftentimes the parents who want their children to learn and push them to take lessons. In my 17 years of instructing, I have seen that this does not work. A child has to be focussed and keen to learn. As far as maximum age, we have taught a few people in their early 70s, and plenty in their 60s.
Why is it important to get lessons from a certified instructor?
Certified instructors have gone through extensive training on the art of teaching. They are able to recognize how each individual learns, and are able to adapt their methods to fit that student.
How much wind is needed for a lesson?
For land lessons, a minimum of 12 knots/22 kph/13.8 mph is needed. For water lessons, 12-14 knots/22-26 kph/13.8 - 16 mph is needed. The heavier the student, the more wind that is required.
What do I need to bring to the lesson?
We provide all the necessary gear. For the land lesson, we recommend sneakers and shorts or jeans that you don’t mind getting a few grass stains on, as well as a good supply of water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a brimmed hat, and of course a positive attitude. For the water lessons, bring board shorts or if you have your own wet suit, you can bring that along. We do have a selection of wetsuits and water booties for our students.
Do I need to have a background in board, wind, or water sports?
Having some background in any of the three can be helpful, but not necessary. Kiteboarding is a unique sport unto its own, and is achievable with no prior experience in any related water activities.
Why can’t I just buy a kite and learn on my own?
Kiteboarding is considered an extreme sport. Nothing will humble you or injure you quicker than the power of the kite if you don’t learn proper control. Many have tried this method, only to learn that lessons are cheaper after they end up destroying their kite long before they learn the sport.
How long are the lessons?
Lessons are typically in two-hour increments. Any longer than two hours, some students seem to regress as fatigue sets in, especially during the water lesson. That being said, land lessons are less taxing, and can run up to 2.5 hours as there is a certain criteria that has to be met in order to move on to the water lessons.
Is it normal to be a little scared?
There is a lot of power in the kite, which can be intimidating. It is quite normal to have some fear, but rest assured, safety is our priority, and we will take you through the process, making you feel as comfortable as possible.
Why are lessons so expensive?
As you learn the sport, you crash the kite frequently. Although these kites are durable, they do have a shelf life which is shortened by constant crashing. Kites have to be replaced often.
